For adolescent girls, chronic overweight can be more than just a health concern. Indeed, it can be a source of great unhappiness, and a catalyst for school bullying and even depression. Overweight teen girls often find themselves in a vicious cycle: They begin comfort-eating to ease the pain of their insecurities, which only leads to the worsening of their overweight condition. Many overweight teen girls avoid fitness due to embarrassment about their appearance, which can lead to a similar vicious cycle. However, as with any overweight group, it is ideal to begin aggressively tackling the problem sooner rather than later. Here are some excellent
fitness ideas for overweight teen girls.
- Martial Arts - Martial arts is one of the most ideal fitness solutions for overweight teen girls. Martial arts - such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Judo - is often viewed as a "boys' sport," due to its violent and aggressive image. However, this could not be farther from the truth. Martial arts focus on discipline, respect, and self-esteem. While hand-to-hand combat can be an aspect of martial arts, violence is not a main component whatsoever. Many overweight teen girls find confidence and develop self-esteem through the practice of martial arts. It is a great option for girls who have become frustrated with more traditional athletic activities.
- Running Clubs - Walking, running, and jogging is one of the most ideal athletic activities for individuals struggling with chronic overweight. However, overweight teen girls often feel insecure about working out in public due to their appearance. However, there are plenty of running and jogging clubs for girls struggling with overweight and poor body image, where girls can work to shed their excess pounds in a nurturing and supportive environment. To find running clubs and groups, check with your local recreation center, or search online.
- Dance - Beginning dance classes can be a great, fun way for overweight teen girls to work to shed the pounds in a supportive environment. Dance classes such as tap and jazz are fun, and allow girls to not only improve their health, but also learn a fun new skill and talent.
Girls have a hard enough time during their adolescent years as it is - chronic overweight only exacerbates this. If you are a parent of an overweight child, remember that it is crucial to begin the process of improving your child's health as soon as possible. When it comes to weight conditions, the problem only worsens as years go by.
